Another Anaphylaxis Shock sent my little one to the Hospital!

So on my last post,  I used Tea Tree Oil on my son’s skin (and continuously moisturized it like there’s no tomorrow to prevent another eczema flare up). It worked for a few days but as soon as the heat wave stroke, OMG!! Another eczema attack had occurred. I was able to manage it (sort of) with hydrocortisone and Baby Aquaphor… BUT… my big tub of Aquaphor ran out!! I thought I had another big tub (16oz) but I guess, I overlooked it. The only aquaphor I had left was in a travel size bottle, probably a quarter of an ounce left in it. I panicked. I went to every store and pharmacy store I could go to but no signs of Aquaphor. Sigh.

So a relative gave me Sarna lotion for Sensitive Skin. It was a bit thick and it was kind of helping moisturize his skin. That same night, my fish-loving little one was about to have a feast of grilled farmed Tilapia. How happy was he to see that his meal will be fish!! He started eating it, but after a few minutes he started scratching like crazy (at that time, I suspected it’s his eczema acting up again and I felt really helpless…but all I can do was comfort him and hold his hand and try to stop him from scratching EVERYWHERE!! His face already started bleeding. Again.). He still kept eating his food BUT (again…) he started coughing!!! I was giving him water and he would drink it but he just kept coughing. I stopped feeding him, after a few minutes he threw up! So, I gave him Antihistamine right away and went straight to the bathroom to give him a bath. He didn’t stop throwing up. I still put the Sarna lotion on him because his skin was really extremely dry!

His face started to puff up and his lips… Oh my! His lips started to swell. I knew right then and there that he was having another Anaphylaxis shock.

For the next few paragraphs I am about to blurb, I am sure it will be a familiar post for a parent who has experienced a life threatening Anaphylaxis shock.

So my story continues…

My friend was panicking too and said they will drive us to the hospital (thank goodness it was only 5 minutes away) so I don’t have to drive by myself. So we drove to the hospital emergency. No questions asked. They grabbed his Health/Medical card and took us to the first available bed. In a few seconds (yes, seconds), there were at least 9 or 10 people around us. I am not kidding. This made my son cry even more. I told them right away that he’s had the maximum daily dosage of Antihistamine for his weight (5ml) but not Epinephrine yet. So they gave him a shot of epinephrine. Fifteen minutes later, they administered another shot as he didn’t show any signs of recovery. He was really weak and very puffy. His lips looked like it was going to rip due to swelling. He wouldn’t stop crying.

After a couple of hours, they had me administer oral steroid on him (prednisone). The nurse who was helping us (wish I got her name) was extremely helpful and I must say I have never had that experience ever in any hospital, clinic or medical office. She was comforting me and she said that she knows eczema can be really stressful and she knows because her daughter has eczema too. She also said that she uses Aquaphor ointment on her daughter and this is the only thing that really moisturizes her skin. She knew of my situation (I couldn’t find Aquaphor anywhere here and I’ve only been getting it online on Amazon across the border). So she called every open pharmacy and told me that she spoke to a Pharmacist at Shoppers Drug Mart and they are open 24 hours (about 5kms away) and that she told the pharmacist to give me a bottle of aquaphor ointment as I badly need it for my son. This should tie us over until I am able to get myself another tub of it.

THANK YOU NURSE (whoever you are!!!!) AND THANK YOU to the PHARMACIST who gave me a bottle of Aquaphor ointment (that you use to make your compounds) even if you didn’t have anything on the shelves left to sell!!

They don’t know what might have sent him to the hospital. I told them there was nothing unusual with what he had for dinner because he eats fish all the time and he has had Tilapia too before so it couldn’t be it. They suspect it was the lotion because since his skin wasn’t already doing good, the lotion apparently contains HCl components and that might have aggrevated his condition, thus, sending him to anaphylaxis shock.

After being discharged from the hospital (We were discharged past 3 in the morning), I got the prescribed oral steroids (prednisone – he’s supposed to take for  a week) plus that bottle of aquaphor at the pharmacy. Got home and I applied aquaphor ALL night on my son’s skin. Ahhhh finally!!! The dryness is saying goodbye! SIGH. What a sigh of relief!!!

After almost a week, his skin still has eczema but better than last week… sigh.

Still, I suspect that it was the Farmed Tilapia that gave him an Anaphylaxis shock.
